Students will learn the step-by-step process of creating a sailor’s valentine as well as a shell flower to incorporate into the design. This is a beginning shell mosaic class and is designed to give students a basic understanding of design, tools, and materials.

The sailors’ valentine legend began in the 1800’s when a sailor decided to use his collection of seashells to create a mosaic. As the story goes, he found an eight sided compass case, and using dark and light shells wrote “To My Valentine.” When the sailor returned home from his voyage he presented his gift to his love. These romantic creations encompass the spirit of love and devotion for those we hold dear.
