About the event
Weaving is one of the oldest surviving crafts in the world. Weaving and cloth-making started as a family endeavor, and the making of clothing for the family was usually the woman’s job. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s that factory industry was introduced. Tap into both the history of hand-made cloth and the Florida Maritime Museum’s building in this beginners-friendly weaving class. The building now known as the Florida Maritime Museum served as the home and weaving studio of master weaver Robert Sailors from 1974 to 1995. Get a behind-the-scenes look at some of Sailors’ pieces that were woven in our building and now reside in our collection.
